Discover the Urdenbacher Kämpe nature reserve on a guided walk! Our guides offer a wide range of themed walks which take place on the first Sunday of each month. Other dates are available by arrangement. Meet our team and find out about the walks on offer. We look forward to seeing you!
Our guides are local residents who know the nature reserve inside out. They enjoy introducing this unique landscape to visitors on themed walks and at events for children and adults. Each walk offers fascinating insights into the diversity of life in the natural wetlands, riparian woodlands, pastures, meadow orchards, and hedgerows as well as around the former Roman fort of Haus Bürgel.
On a one-year course funded by the European Union, the Haus Bürgel Eco Centre in collaboration with the NRW Nature and Environmental Protection Academy trained twenty-six volunteers as guides. They learned how the interaction of nature and humans shapes the landscape, refreshed their knowledge of local history and traditions, and honed their communication skills, learning how to engage with visitors and provide a wonderful experience of nature.
All guides completed seventy hours of intensive theoretical and practical training which included wetlands ecology, zoology, botany, and didactic skills. To become certified guides, participants had to submit a written dissertation as well as plan and lead a guided walk. We are pleased to say that in September 2014 all participants were awarded the title "Certified Nature and Landscape Guide for the Urdenbacher Kämpe Wetlands" – a guarantee of expertise from which all visitors participating in guided walks will benefit.
Grown up in the Lower Rhine area and living close to the "Urdenbacher Kämpe" for more than 30 years I am quite familiar with the typical landscape with its poplar and willow trees, the wetlands and the Old Rhine. The regular flooding has created a manifold piece of nature, which offers new discoveries through the course of the year. If you are interested in landscape and nature, I would like to invite you to a guided tour to the area, throughout which we will explore the different habitats and enjoy the beauty of this unique piece of land.
